It’s not uncommon for people of all ages to require the use of a catheter. Catheters are used to help people empty their bladder when they are dealing with incontinence, surgery, or other medical issues. Catheters are easy to transport and if taught properly, the patient will be able to remove the catheter and clean or change it on their own. Here are some instructions on how to sterilize Astra Tech catheters.
The supplies you will need include a sealable freezer bag, a tupperware container, and 70 percent rubbing alcohol. These supplies are important to the cleaning process of the catheter if you want to sterilize it and use it again. The first thing you need to do when you remove it is rinse it with water from the tap for at least 30 seconds and then let it sit to dry on a paper towel for at least one hour. Once it is dry you need to place it in the tupperware with the alcohol for five minutes. The entire catheter must be submerged in the alcohol. Then put the catheter into the freezer bag without rinsing it of the alcohol. When you go to use the catheter again you should rinse it off with tap water or distilled water should you have well water and not tap water. If the catheter has not been used for seven days from the time it was soaked in alcohol be sure you do it again when it is removed from the freezer bag. Multiple catheters can be soaked in alcohol at one time so long as they are all submerged in the alcohol. When you go to store them be sure to do so in separate freezer bags. If you have any questions about sterilizing your catheter or Urostomy products, be sure to discuss the process with your doctor.
